Questions About The Cost Of A Tutor
What
does tutoring cost?
There is no general set
scale of fees for tutoring.
Ask prospective tutors for details of the way in which
they charge and the actual level of fees.
Are
the fees fixed or variable?
A tutorial may be of a fixed length and charged
at a fixed fee.
Alternatively, and especially in pressured situations,
it may be better to have variable length tutorials with
a variable fee.
What
is included in the fees?
Does the tutor supply any materials such as books,
worksheets, equipment or music scores and are these being
loaned or given?
Does the tutor supply any consumables such as paper or
art and craft materials and are these included in the
fees or charged separately?
In summary, are there any extras?
Is
there a separate charge for travel to our home?
If you live close to a tutor there may be no
separate charge for travel.
However, travel to you is part of the service provided
by the tutor for your convenience.
The tutor incurs both time and money costs and it is an
important aspect to bear in mind when comparing different
services.
Is
there a distinction between value and cost?
[How should we view the words cost, cheap, expensive and
value?]
If somebody charges double that of another but achieves
three times the progress
then they are cheaper ie better value for money - they
are not more expensive - they just charge more.
On the other hand, just because somebody charges more
does not imply that they provide a better service than
somebody who charges less.
