Questions About A Tutor

What should we look for in a tutor?
Rapport - with the parents and the student
Reliability - in the aspects considered to be important
Commitment - in the aspects considered to be important
Subject knowledge - to the level and extent required
Experience - to the extent relevant to the situation

Is it better if the tutor comes to us or we go to them?
Where there is a choice it is often easier for the family if the tutor visits them
but there may be situations in which the child will work better if left with a tutor,
where the equipment that a tutor has is needed eg a piano or lathe,
or where other special circumstances apply eg if the tutor is partially disabled.
In terms of having discussions with the tutor whilst the child is not present
or generally creating a team effort involving child, tutor and parents
then home visits may be advantageous.
Further, many parents will prefer, especially with younger children, not to leave the child.

Will the tutorial be for one hour?
One hour may not be the best value for money.
With a very young child a period of 40 minutes may be the best option.
For an older student, one and a half hours may be the most efficient.
Raise the question with the prospective tutors
- a discussion will often develop about your particular situation
- and you may learn a lot about a tutor in this way.
